Hanoi Ao dai Festival to honour capital’s cultural values

(National Times)- The Hanoi Ao dai Festival 2016, taking place from October 14 – 16 at Thang Long Imperial Citadel, is part of activities to honour Hanoi’s cultural values and promote fashion-based tourism products.

Do Dinh Hong, Director of the capital’s Department of Tourism, made the announcement at a press conference on October 6. 
Theme ‘The Quintessence of Vietnam’s Ao Dai”, the festival will bring both domestic and foreign visitors to a festive atmosphere imbued with traditional cultural identities.

The event will feature 38 booths displaying unique Ao Dai collections from the past by numerous artists and artisans around the country, particularly from Hanoi, as well as four spaces introducing materials and looms from Van Phuc silk village (Hanoi), Hoi An silk village (Quang Nam province), Mong ethnic group (Ha Giang) and Ta Oi ethnic group in A Luoi district (Thua Thien Hue).

Visitors to the festival will also be introduced to designs by renowned designers from three regions of the country as well as have a chance to learn more about the stages of designing and sewing Ao Dai dresses.

The highlight of the event will be a show of Ao Dai designs, themed ‘Hanoi Ao Dai and national music’, to be held on the evening of October 15 at Doan Mon Gate of the Citadel.

A space will be specifically dedicated to displaying images and documents on the development of Ao Dai throughout different historical periods. The unique culinary arts of the three regions will also be promoted on the occasion.

Within the framework of the festival, a wide variety of interesting activities will be held including a painting contest on Ao Dai for children, a cooking course and a flower arrangement contest.

In addition, seminars discussing the preservation and promotion of the value of traditional Ao Dai in tourism development will also be held, attracting numerous experts, famous designers and enterprises.

On the occasion, a bicycle and cyclo parade featuring young women wearing Ao Dai will take place on October 16 from Thang Long Imperial Citadel through Hoang Dieu, Dien Bien Phu, Doc Lap, Hung Vuong, Thanh Nien and Phan Dinh Phung streets.
